Adult Counseling Services and Programs

Experienced Certified Professional Counselors provide individual, family, and group counseling, vocational guidance, and act as liaisons with health, legal, vocational, financial and other social service providers to insure that all relevant services are obtained. the agency also provides public education services for the community.

To assist the client and family in the adjustment process, counselors provide information concerning the specific diagnosis and seizure type as well as the general aspects of Epilepsy and/or Seizure Disorder such as prevalence, nature, types of seizures, first-aid procedures, causes and treatments.

A counselor will assess the client's specific problems such as acceptance of physical impairment, low self-esteem, stress, depression, difficulty with relationships, isolation and personal family adjustments. After establishing the client's needs, the counselor and the client will develop a treatment plan to facilitate the adjustment process.

Psychotherapy is also offered to address more intense stresses and emotional difficulties which are inhibiting the client's adjustment to Epilepsy.

Group members share their own experiences and practical approaches to solving problems they have encountered. The opportunity to express themselves and share feelings with others promotes the client's adjustment to the disorder.

The group leader and group members mutually decide topics of discussion that will help resolve their common problems. Topics may include: facts and myths surrounding Epilepsy, how his or her relationships are affected, and how to manage discrimination.


Adult and Family Counseling

This program offers counseling for adults with Epilepsy and their families. The focus is on promoting a more positive adjustment to the diagnosis of Epilepsy and the experience of living with seizures.

To assist in this adjustment process, counselors provide information concerning the specific diagnosis and seizure type as well as the general aspects of Epilepsy and/or Seizure Disorder such as prevalence, nature, types of seizures, first-aid procedures, causes, and treatments.

Support Group Counseling

Support groups are designated appropriately according to different age levels, professions and individual needs. Use of the group process enables clients to better cope and adjust to their seizure disorder.

Vocational Counseling

Certified Rehabilitation counselors provide an assessment of the client's employability, promote vocational exploration and supply guidance. Counselors assist in developing job seeking skills including interviewing techniques and resume preparation. They also provide support and encouragement to the individual in his or her attempt to enter competitive employment.

Client's will be furnished with leads for jobs, or referrals for additional education or training to enhance their employability. Counselors will also provide advocacy on behalf of the client when needed.

Public Education Services

The Agency provides workshops to the area social service organizations, businesses, public and private schools, and health service providers. The workshops are conducted by a knowledgeable Community Educator to enhance public awareness and acceptance of the needs, capabilities, and employment of the individuals with seizure disorders. Furthermore, the goal of the Agency is to reduce ignorance, prejudices and social barriers towards persons with Epilepsy.

The workshops generally include: a verbal presentation, video, and a discussion period focusing on the nature and manifestations of Epilepsy, proper first aid procedures, current information on the causes and treatments of Epilepsy, and the needs of persons with Epilepsy and/or Seizure disorders. A description of Agency services will also be provided.
